dTIMS Desktop Evolution to SQL Express
Rob Piane, P.Eng., Deighton

Effective June 1st 2012, dTIMS desktop will no longer support a Microsoft Jet Database (Microsoft Access) backend. From this date forward, dTIMS Desktop will be made available to new and existing clients with a Microsoft SQL Express connection only.

The decision to introduce Microsoft SQL Express to dTIMS Desktop will result in the evolution of dTIMS Desktop into an "Enterprise Level" database that will offer users many benefits not offered by the existing Microsoft Jet Database. These benefits will result in enhanced software performance and greater database capacity.

Bringing dTIMS Desktop into an introductory enterprise level will bring increased database reliability with the no-cost option of installing the freely available Microsoft SQL Express.

Deighton will continue to support the Microsoft Access version of dTIMS Desktop for a term of two (2) years from the effective date of this policy. Maintenance of the Microsoft Access version of dTIMS Desktop will cease on the effective date of this policy. Users of the dTIMS Desktop Access version will be transferred to the dTIMS CT SQL Maintenance program with no change to their current maintenance rates.

Deighton Waves Asset Management Flag
by Arif Rafiq, Deighton

Transportation Asset Management is steadily becoming more of a hot topic amongst Transportation Professionals around the globe. TRB’s 10th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management was held in April in San Diego, California. With over 300 attendees from around North America, as well as a few who attended from New Zealand, the week-long conference was an astounding success. Deighton was in attendance as leaders from many Departments of Transportation openly discussed the national state of affairs regarding Transportation Asset Management, what needs to get done, and where the most progressive programs are currently at.

With over 40% of the United States having implemented dTIMS, state DOTs have an unprecedented opportunity to leverage their existing investment in dTIMS to gain more results targeted to a wider audience for all types of roadway asset management. Rather than investing huge resources in acquiring new software, state DOTs can harness the vast capabilities of dTIMS to manage multiple asset classes interconnected on multiple location referencing systems, while being able to perform cross-asset optimization and trade-off analysis.

Being able to effectively manage multiple transportation assets on a single enterprise software platform can help to achieve the high level of efficiency public organizations are striving for.

Deighton YouTube Channel
by Craig German, Deighton

In the January Insider we mentioned we are working to improve our dTIMS V9 documentation with the addition of video tutorials. In conjunction with Pavia Systems Inc. (a company that specializes in creating web-based training programs) we have developed a short video that is now available on the Deighton YouTube Channel.

  • dTIMS wf (Workflow) - an overview of dTIMS wf, exploring what the product is and how it integrates into dTIMS.

The next scheduled video to be posted is a short marketing video exploring dTIMS md (Management Dashboard). We expect this to be completed by June.
